Answers:

  1. Orlick knows that Provis is really the convict Magwitch, and not Pip's uncle.

Orlick has been bitter towards Pip for a long time, especially since he was fired from his job with Miss Haversham.  It was Orlick who hit Mrs. Joe with the leg iron abandoned by Magwitch, and he blames both that attack and his later dismissal from the Haversham situation on Pip.  Orlick thinks Pip came between him and Biddy, and is frustrated and angry that Pip always seems to be "favoured", while he himslf is "bullied and beat".  He says that because of Pip, he has been "pretty well hunted...out of (the) country, so far as getting a easy living in it goes".

Orlick has been stalking and watching Pip for some time, waiting for a chance to wreak his revenge.  Having known Pip as a child, Orlick knew that Pip "hadn't found no uncles then", and, suspicious, he soon discovered from some new acquaintances that Uncle Provis is in reality Magwitch.  Orlick also knows that there are those "that won't have Magwitch...alive in the same land with them, and that's had such sure information of him when he was alive in another land, as that he couldn't and shouldn't leave it unbeknown and put them in danger" (Chapter 53).
