Magwitch, in Ch.56, is a badly injured person. He has broken a pair of ribs and one of his lungs has been punctured. He breathed with great difficulty and consequently spoke little. His physical condition steadily deteriorated: "he wasted, and became slowly weaker and worse."
Mentally, he "was tired out" and had resigned himself to his fate: He was certain that he would be sentenced to death. Slowly he wasted away in the prison hospital lying down staring at the ceiling.
