Lord of the Flies

I'm doing a project on Lord of the Flies, and I have to pick 1 character & describe him by getting 5 objects, and put them in a small brown bag. I was wanting to do Ralph. And I have some ideas on what to do, but I'd like to hear your opinions too!

I think I might choose Piggy. It would be simple to get a pair of glasses which represent his insight. Some kind of food could represent the reason for his name. A small shell could represent the conch, which Piggy guards so closely and with which he is killed, This would symbolize the loss of civilized behavior in the boys. I would take some leaves off a plant to represent the shelters that he helped make to show his practicality. Then, a toy pr stuffed pig could represent the foreshadowing between the chant, "Kill the pig" and Piggy's death. Good luck with your project.

Jack would be an easy character to do this sort of activity: a stick sharpened at both ends (used as a spear and sacrificial offering of the Lord of the Flies to the Beast and sued to chase Ralph with); face paints or make-up could show his development of the mask behind which he is capable of revealing his innate cruelty; a pig (toy not real!) would show his interest in being a hunter as well as the song "kill the pig"; A large stone could represent castle rock; some burned embers could show his short-sightedness in allowing the fire to burn out.

If you wanted to stick with your original choice of Ralph, I am sure you can accomplish that by using the above examples and making it your own!  Just think about what people have suggested would work for Piggy or Jack.  Think about why and how these objects represent these particular characters.  Then, rack your brain for some of Ralph's stand-out characteristics and do the same.  Good luck!

Ralph may be easy, as would Piggy and Jack. These are the more prominent characters in the book.  Simon would be great fun, though.  I would include a veil to represent his ability to see through to the dark side of humanity.  Another object would be a running shoe to represent his quick, furtive nature...he doesn't want to be followed into the woods and his hiding place.  A magnifying glass to show his investigative nature...he does go to the cave to find the "beastie" for himself.  A fuzzy something to represent Simon's sensitive self, and something to represent innocence...a baby shoe or piece of clothing, for instance.
