Golding felt that mankind was essentially evil and the evil was only contained due to society's restrictions. The story of "Lord of the Flies" expresses that theme and shows through the actions of the boys how, once the restrictions of accepted society are removed, the savagery comes out. Golding saw in WW II images that upset him greatly. He saw mankind as savage. WW II, like most wars, was about differing ideologies and a quest for power. Those differences and the passion they bring out of people create that savagery. Simply put, war is savage by its very nature. "Mankind's essential illness" is what brings about war. People have different beliefs and people hunger for power so people fight wars. WW II was illustrative of "mankind's essential illness" as is any war. Posted by luannw on Nov 10, 2008. |
