There are many images of the fire in Chapter 2 itself. Let's start with some of them. Golding writes of a "clean flag of fire," and later, of a "savage arm of heat" and a "beard of flame." These images taken together make it clear that the fire is like a living thing, and more than that. It is a person, an active and intelligent person. It is male (the "beard"), and, through the "clean flag," associated with signaling and therefore with civilization. It is like through keeping the fire alive, the boys are keeping an adult male representative of civilization alive.
