   In both incidents Ralph and Piggy are both referring to the death of Simon.  Simon comes out of the jungle covered in muck, leaves and vines.  The boys are scared already and they attack Simon and beat him to death.  Piggy and Ralph try to convince themselves that it was "an accident" and could not have been helped.  They didn't want to admit to murdering Simon.
