The fire the boys build keeps getting bigger and bigger until it finally gets out of control, causing an explosion. The explosion from the fire cause some creeper vines to fly into the air looking like snakes. Ironically, they appear to be like the “snake-thing” the boy with the mulberry birth mark feared would eat him. This adds credibility to the young boy's story. Ironically, the boy with the birthmark is missing, presumably burned in the fire. This is the beginning of the breakdown of order and authority. The boys may not really believe in the "snake-thing" or "beastie" but they don't eliminate the possibility that it exists, either. This is the beginning of chaos because it shows lack of confidence in their leaders, Ralph and Piggy, who both said the beast did not exist and gives an opening for Ralph to boast that he will kill the beast.
