The easiest example of the difference in language comes in when each of the two can speak easily and clearly, and when each grinds to a halt. The officer stops when trying to articulate his expectations for the boys. This in turn disrupts Ralph's ability to speak, so that he twice tries to explain what happened and why on that last page, then falls silent. The officer's words "Like the Coral Island" sums up a lot of the difference. The officer is still viewing things through culturally conditioned eyes. Ralph is seeing the world, the island, and the boys through lenses of naked realism.
