Chapter 4 establishes Roger's personality as dark and cruel. He destroys the littluns' (Henry, Percival, and Johnny) sandcastles on the beach. Maurice joins him but feels bad and quickly leaves. Johnny throws sand, causing Percival to cry again. Henry walks away. Roger follows Henry to the beach and throws stones near him to disturb him. While all react to the situation in different manners it becomes clear that Roger has taken his role to the next level revealing his "dark boy" tendencies.
Jack removes himself even further from moral responsibility as he is now able to hide behind his painted face. This brings him one step closer to his violent destiny. Like Roger, he enjoys testing the boundaries of his newly powerful and violent identity.
