   In chapter ten, Roger returns and finds that the group is busy beating Willard, yet it is not stipulated what he had done to deserve such a punishment.

   This is further evidence of the breakdown of social structure in the novel. The boys are fully engaged in savage acts, and appear to be looking for any reason to act on their rage.
