Lord of the Flies is based on Ballantyne's 1857 novel The Coral Island. The Coral Isand is about a group of English boys who are shipwrecked on an island. They work together to keep themselves safe. The only evil in the book is external or in that of a tribe of cannibals that live on the island. The idea that with hard work and serious effort one can overcome any hardship is a Victorian view.
Golding gives his characters the same names as those found in Ballantyne's book, thus creating an obvious response to The Coral Island. Golding's world view is a much harsher one in that the evil on the island is internal, not external.
