In Ralph you can see the clearest tensions between civilization and savagery. You could also call those ethical behavior versus sin, or even order versus chaos, but I prefer the first pairing. All boys are pulled in one way or another in the novel, but Ralph is most specifically positioned in the center. He's the one that feels the tug of these drives, rather than just having them happen. You can see the pull of "the dark side" in the pleasure he gets from killing a boar. This is balanced by his insistence on the signal fire.
