    There are a few characters that show that killing is essential. Clearly, Jack is the primary character concerned with killing, although in chapter 8 (I believe) the readers notice that Ralph also becomes exhilarated by being involved in the hunt. For the first time he questions what is more important: the hunt or the signal fire?
