Ralph is the "fair-haired" boy; the good guy who finishes last because even though he is good, he is ineffectual.  Ralph is the voice of civilization.  He knows they need to be organized, he knows they need rules, he knows that they need to work in order to survive, but he doesn't know how to convey what he intuitively knows.  He lacks the charm and charisma that Jack has.  Jack is the cool, fun guy who promises the boys lots of good times and lots of food but he doesn't tell them that they will ultimately become his slaves as he gains more and more power.  Ralph is just the opposite.  Ralph knows that sometimes things such as huts and a signal fire only come with hard work and some sacrifice, but he also knows that those things are necessary.  Jack becomes a dictator through his charisma; Ralph nearly loses his life because he tried to salvage their civilization.
