the worst industrial accident in world history occurred at the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India. The Union Carbide complex, which created pesticides, had been built in a poverty-stricken area where 1,000,000 people lived in shacks or on the streets. In the middle of the night on December 3, 1984, a poisonous gas called methyl isocyanate (MIC) began to leak from the plant. As a cloud of deadly gas traveled southward, stunned residents awoke to find themselves choking to death. In the mass panic of trying to escape the gas, more than 2,500 people died and between 50,000 and 100,00 people were injured. Another 200,000 survivors were left with chronic medical conditions, such as respiratory problems and blindness.
