Macbeth is considered to be one of the great tragedies.  To understand the theme you must understand a little about how Macbeth comes into his role as King.  In the beginning of Macbeth he is told by the three witches what his fate will be.  He goes home and tells his wife what the witches have told him.   Based on their prediction he kills Duncan, but the motivation behind this act was his wife. She was the power behind his actions.  Had She not swayed him I don't think Macbeth would have gone through with the assassination of Duncan.  His wife was the power behind the throne.

The witches controlled him with their predictions of power and glory.  He had  Banquo killed because he feared what the witches had told him about Banquo's children sitting on the throne.   Once again it is not his power but his fear and desire for power that creates this situation.

Macbeth was voted in to power by the warlords which also made him a weak monarch because he would be in the power of the whims of his warlords.  If he did not rule the way they thought he should they could have removed him.

Mostly Macbeth was ruled by fate.  This theme was very common in Shakespeare's literature.  The real power of peoples lives was fate.

This is just one direction you could take.  There is a lot of good material and good ideas for this topic at the link I have listed below.
