1776
Musical by Sherman Edward, 1969. This is one of very few historically based musicals that have succeeded in the theater despite lofty content.
The play portrays the spring and summer of 1776 in Philadelphia, with a grand climax on the 4th of July. Adams, Franklin, Washington, and Jefferson duly appear onstage. The work is remarkably true to history, and there is even a discussion of the details of the text of the Declaration of Independence.
Among the songs are Cool Considerate Men, Sit Down John, Riddle Twiddle and Resolve, and Molasses and Rum.
