This scene sets the stage for the fight between Mercutio and Tybalt. Tybalt has challenged Romeo because Romeo crashed the Capulet party the evening prior. Mercutio is demonstrating by his speeches in Act III, scene i that he is punchy and eager for a fight. He claims that it's Benvolio who wants to fight, but he is merely projecting his own angst onto the kind-hearted Montague. As a whole, this leads to the climax of the play in which Tybalt kills Mercutio and Romeo kills Tybalt in response. Tybalt is Juliet's cousin... Romeo's new cousin-in-law. This event creates more tension for the two lovers and leads to Romeo's banishment and the mess that eventually finds the two lovers killing themselves.
