What is an ugli?

An ugli (Citrus reticulata) is a tropical fruit originating in Jamaica. This unattractive fruit has a loose, wrinkled, yellowish-red skin with a greenish tinge. It ranges in size between a navel orange and a giant grapefruit.

The acid-sweet flavor of the ugli is like that of a grapefruit with hints of orange. The ugli may actually be a hybrid (the offspring of genetically different varieties of species) between a grapefruit and a tangerine.
