What are RDAs (Recommended Dietary Allowances)?

RDAs (Recommended Dietary Allowances) are estimates for meeting the nutritional needs of a group of people. They are not averages, but are calculated for individuals with the highest dietary requirements. RDAs are intended for individuals whose physical activity is considered light and who live in temperate (neither extremely hot or cold) climates. The goal of RDAs is to provide a safety margin for each nutrient (a source of nourishment found in food), above the minimum level that will maintain health.

RDAs for the United States, formulated by the United States Food and Drug Administration, are based on tables prepared by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Research Council. The RDAs were established primarily in connection with legal labeling requirements of foods and vitamin preparations.
