What terms are allowed under Food and Drug Administration rules to describe the fat content of foods?

There are two kind of fat, saturated and unsaturated. Saturated fat usually comes from animals and is solid at room temperature. An example of a food containing saturated fat would be butter. An unsaturated fat is just the opposite. It usually comes from vegetables and is liquid at room temperature. An example of an unsaturated fat would be corn oil.

Fat free Less than 0.5 gram fat per serving.
Saturated fat free Less than 0.5 gram per serving and the level of trans fatty acids does not exceed 1 percent of total fat.
Low fat 3 grams or less per serving. If the serving is 30 grams or less, fat may be no more than 3 grams per 50 grams of the food.
